Rows of flowers and double crochet stitches in peach, bluish-green and cream colors gave this crochet blanket it's name: Coral Reef. The flower stitches look complex but are actually very simple! This easy crochet blanket is really just a clever placement of double crochets!
You can make this blanket as a baby blanket, like you see in my photos. Or, keep adding rows to make it longer into a Lap-ghan!
1 skein each of three different colors in worsted weight yarn
5mm/H8 Crochet Hook

Gauge: 1.5" from petal to petal
Multiples: 3
Size: 30" x 33"
Ch 114
Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook and across. Change color to begin next row.
Row 2: ch 2, turn, dc in next dc, ch 3, 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook of the ch 3 just made (petal made), *dc3tog using next 3 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook of the ch 3 just made (second petal made), repeat from * across to last 2 dc, dc2tog using last 2 dc
Row 3: ch 3, turn, dc in 1 stitch directly beneath ch 3, ch 3, dc in 3rd ch from hook of the ch 3 just made, *sk next chsp, 3 dc in top of dc3tog cluster from previous row, repeat from * across to end. 2 dc in tch, change color
Row 4: ch 2, turn, dc in next dc and across
Repeat rows 2-4 for pattern to desired length
Abbreviations:
dc - double crochet
tch - turning chain
ch - chain
dc3tog - double crochet 3 together
dc2tog - double crochet 2 together
I just started the afghan and am on row 3. At the beginning of the row it looks like I make a petal, but it only seems like there is the one on this row. Everything else looks like it is just 3dc in the top of the cluster below. Is this correct? It seems odd that it is just at the beginning. Please let me know, as I don't want to continue until I find out. Mary V.
ReplyDeleteThe first part of the flowers is three double crochets together, then chain 3, then put a double crochet in the first loop of that chain 3 just made. Then move to the next stitch and do it all over again. 3 double crochets together, chain 3, double crochet in first loop of the chain three just made (or 3rd ch from hook)

If it's the top of the petals, then you begin the row with just a couple of double crochet in the very first stitch, then three double crochet shells in the top of each dc3tog across.
DeleteHow did you get the blue border down the sides of the blanket? It doesn't look like a separate border when you start the first row with the blue. I really want to make this but would love to know the answer to this.

DeleteI just did a double crochet around the entire blanket evenly in the color that I used in between flower rows. I hope that explains it. I didn't really do anything special. :)

So did you start with the blue or did you start on the flower row? I can only see a one dbl crochet row of border versus starting with blue (dbl crochet row). If you started on the flower row, how do you do that?

In Row 4 could you please elaborate "dc in next dc and across". I am unclear how to recognize what is considered "next dc". Only the first dc from the previous row is clear to me. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWhen you chain up at the beginning of the row, that typically counts as the first stitch or first dc in this case. So then you dc in the next dc.. so find the next stitch in the row immediately below and dc into it.

I realized that the reason I did not see any dc in the preceding row (other than the last one in the preceding row) is that when I did Row 3 my eyes wandered to Row 2 and where I had to do 3 dc in one st, I did a 3dctog! The flower looked like a flower with that extra petal on top, so I thought it as okay and that it would be used later. Reader error! Apologies.
ReplyDeleteI did use a foundation double crochet and it was tighter than the succeeding row
so either I crochet this foundation more loosely or use a bigger hook for the foundation.

DeleteI used the standard sized Caron Simply Soft skeins of yarn plus a left over from Bernat Satin (I think) for the teal stripe.
I'm what I refer to as an "eye-baller". I've worked with common brands of yarn such as Caron Simply Soft, Red Heart and Hobby Lobby ILTY so much that I can usually tell how many skeins I'll need just by looking at them. :)
