February Love - Crochet Placemat Idea

crochet placemat heart pattern

Every once in a while, I like to do a sort-of pattern that's more of a Crochet Idea. Something you can whip up last minute, and possibly with scraps. For this one, I chose to do crochet placemats with little crochet heart "appliqued" to the corner.

It's made of a double crochet v-stitch. I looked over numerous crochet heart patterns on the web, trying to find one that I liked. I don't enjoy doing things complex if I'm short on time.

The heart I liked the most is from Lizzie Bella. I didn't make mine quite as large as she makes hers, but you can choose whichever size you like best for your placemats. You can get the crochet heart pattern here:  https://lizziebellablog.wordpress.com/2014/02/01/granny-square-heart-tutorial/

You can also choose where to place yours. I did a short voting survey of a small handful of my Facebook Group followers to see which placement they liked best. The single heart in the bottom right received the most votes.

For the border, I didn't want something plain, like a double crochet around. I went for the slanted crochet shell stitch. It's a multiple of 3, so when you finish your placemat, just do single crochets on each end in that multiple.

Previously, I've never really been sponsored by any crafting company. In January, I was approached by LoveCrafts.com to collaborate with them on a project with yarn they supply. So I picked out this beautiful yarn called Paintbox Yarns Simply DK. This yarn comes in 51 luscious shades to choose from and is available as 100% acrylic and 100% cotton.

The colors I chose for my placemats are: (all acrylic)
  • Vanilla Cream (107)
  • Red Wine (115)
  • Bubblegum Pink (150)
  • Blush Pink (153)
  • Candyfloss Pink (149)
I chose one skein of each color, but 2 of the Vanilla Cream. I will be making a project in the Spring with this same yarn, so do stay tuned to the blog!

-MATERIALS-
  • 1 Skein each of yarn listed above
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook (look in the right column for my favorite!)
  • Darning Needle
  • Sharp Scissors

-PATTERN-
Ch 54

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (this row will stabilize the bottom for when you want to add your border)

Row 2: ch 3, turn, sk next 2 sc, (dc2tog, ch 1, dc2tog)in next ch (dc V-stitch made), *sk next 2 sc, dc V-stitch in next sc, repeat from * across. Dc in last sc.

Repeat Row 2 until the placemat is your desired size.

The finished size of my placemat is 11 1/2" x 14" before adding the border. I made mine with 18 rows total.

I varied my colored rows, but did two rows of each color. I also varied my borders and my hearts for nice diversity. Make some today and share with us in our Facebook Group!
